X-axis and Y-axis
X and Y axes are reference lines on a graph. Most graphs have an x-axis and a y-axis. Here is a diagram of a typical set of axes:
- The point (0,0) is called the origin
- The horizontal axis is the x-axis
- The vertical axis is the y-axis
* X and Y axes are generally used in the coordinates system.
* A coordinate system is a two-dimensional number line, for example, two perpendicular number lines or axes.
To graph a point, you draw a dot at the coordinated that corresponds to the ordered pair. it is always a good idea to start at the origin. The x-coordinate tells you how many steps you have to take to the right (positive) or left(negative) on the x-axis, and the y-coordinate tells you how many steps to move up (positive) or down (negative) on the y-axis.

***Often remembering which is the x-axis and which is the y-axis is a tricky thing. Just remember a little rhyme that will help you every time:
x to the left and y to the sky.
x to the left and y to the sky.
